When you’re out in the winter snow or slush, you need to know that your foot boots are made to keep both you and the environment safe. Truly sustainable winter boots should be weather-resistant, built to last for years, and free of toxic waterproof finishes.
If you follow environmentally and health-conscious fashion, you’ve probably heard mention of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS). These substances are used in all industries, from fashion to household products, to protect surfaces from water and dirt. Reduces dirt without compromising breathability. Also known as “forever chemicals” by scientists and durable water repellents (DWR) by the industry, these waterproofing substances are widely used in outdoor and ski equipment, especially snow-proof winter boots.
The problem with PFAS is that once they flake off your boots and enter the environment, they don’t go away. Because of their strong chemical bonds, they take a very long time to break down and remain in water, snow, and the surrounding environment, ultimately contaminating soil and drinking water. And this is not just an environmental issue. PFAS can also enter your home through your shoes. Exposure has been linked to a variety of health problems, from some cancers to fertility and immune system complications.
Unless a brand specifically states that its waterproof finish is PFAS-free, PFC-free, or fluorochemical-free, it’s safe to assume it’s made using permanent chemicals.

Safe and Sustainable Materials: You already know how to tell if a brand is PFAS-free, but there are some other steps you can take to stay safe. If you’re looking for naturally water-resistant boots, try leather. Be sure to look for certification from the Leather Working Group (LWG) to ensure the material has been sustainably processed. If your brand uses recycled materials in its boots, look for a GRS certification to prove it’s truly recycled. You can also check the Bluesign label and restricted substances list to ensure that the brand takes chemical management seriously.
Transparent supply chain: Don’t sacrifice someone else’s health to keep your feet safe. Look for brands that know where and how their products are made, right down to the sourcing of their ingredients. Brands that partner with the Fairwear Foundation, share factory locations, or adhere to a code of conduct are typically more conscious of their supply chain practices.
Aftermarket repairs: Sustainable winter boots should be built to last for years. Look for brands that thoughtfully design their products with longevity in mind and are dedicated to extending their lifespan. Some brands offer replacement parts and tips on repairing your gear, while others offer full-service repairs.
