What has two heads and seven useful functions? No, this isn’t some versatile sideshow oddity, it’s the Y-IN multi-tool. Available in CNC-machined titanium or stainless steel construction, it’s currently on Kickstarter.
Manufactured by the gadget company of the same name, the Y-IN essentially consists of a metal slab that slides back and forth within an open-ended rectangular metal housing.
Slide the slab away from one end of the housing to expose the “A terminal” end of the slab. Slide it out from the other end of the housing to expose the “B terminal”. When the tool is not in use, the slab remains in a neutral position with neither end exposed.
The A terminal has a built-in pry bar that can also be used to slice open packages and perform other semi-sharp cutting tasks. The hexagonal hole in that bar acts as a hexagonal wrench.
The B terminal is equipped with a 3-in-1 bottle opener, nail puller, and 1/4-inch bit driver. Users must provide their own screwdriver bits and carry them separately.
As for the housing, it features four slots for user-supplied glow-in-the-dark vials of tritium (for finding tools in the dark) and a belt clip. This clip can be rotated 90 degrees and placed perpendicular to the housing to act as a torque lever.
To switch terminals, simply grasp the center of the housing and use centrifugal force to move your wrist. A locking lever holds the desired device in place until you next move your wrist.
Assuming the Y-IN multitool goes into production, you can get a titanium multitool for an $89 pledge. The stainless steel model costs $69. Estimated retail prices are $169 and $109, respectively.
Advocates can also choose a titanium slab with a knife blade on one end and a saw blade on the other. Users can swap in and out of existing slabs for an additional $24 (retail price $39).
