SBG shares how to make your home a haven: “When my daughters turned 14, I told them they were going to be responsible for cleaning their own bedrooms. They did a pretty good job, but my oldest daughter had a rough time her senior year of high school (difficult classes, SATs, problems with friends, etc.). I noticed her room was pretty messy one afternoon and decided I was going to tell her when she came home from school. As I walked in the front door, she dumped her heavy backpack on the kitchen table, walked to the living room, and fell asleep on the couch for two hours. I didn’t tell her about her room that night. I had the next day off work, so while she was at school, I made her room the haven she needed. I washed the sheets, hung them on the clothesline, dusted, and bought a little bouquet of flowers for her nightstand. That afternoon, she walked into the house and headed straight for her room, and I heard her yell, “Mommy!” She came into the kitchen, burst into tears, and hugged me. She shared how overwhelmed she felt and how she didn’t have the energy to clean up her room. It reminded me that we can draw the line at holding our kids accountable, but we all need kindness, support, and a loving landing spot.”
