It was exactly one year ago that Leatherman released the 20-in-1 Pocket Tool, which literally claims to be the company’s best multi-tool ever, but it beats every Leatherman tool that came before (or since). I gave it. That’s why the company had so much confidence in Arc. A year later, Leatherman released a new version of the Arc, which may be the most stylish multi-tool ever made. The all-new Arc Obsidian features a reverse black and champagne color scheme that will look great in any tool collection.
New Year’s Eve 2024 has already arrived. That’s all we can think when we look at Arc Obsidian’s deep black chassis and tools, champagne accents and blade combination. Drinking champagne all year long may remind you of your usual nights out.
Regardless, Arc Obsidian stands out brightly against the regular stainless steel and bright custom colors of other multitools to let you know it’s there. This is a reversal of the theme of the original Arc, which is mostly stainless steel, with a black DLC coating protecting the edges of the handle and the MagnaCut blade, which is the tool’s maximum durability.
The Obsidian is dressed entirely in black, replacing the MagnaCut blade, pocket clip, and accent black coating with champagne. The Champagne is a much lighter shade than the brown contrast blade of last year’s special edition 40th Anniversary Tool, more akin to a bourbon than a champagne. This year’s light and cheerful accents definitely stand out against the surrounding black.
The Arc earned its “best of” title by combining some of Leatherman’s top features with the first MagnaCut steel blade on a production Leatherman multi-tool. Most notable is its free architecture and magnetic working system for quick and reliable one-handed opening. You don’t need it as much as your nails. All of the individual instruments are extruded to the outside of the handle for easy access without having to split into pliers. Thumb stud on the main blade ensures smooth Magna-cut edges that won’t reach far.
The Arc also features a universal large bit driver that owners can customize with their favorite bits, and a removable pocket clip that can be attached to the front or back. Other key tools include small bit drivers, diamond-coated files, wood/metal files, plain and needle-nose pliers, interchangeable wire cutters, bottle and can openers, spring-action scissors, and saws. There are 20 tools in total, but the included double-ended bit set allows you to perform far more than 20 specific tasks.
The new limited edition Arc Obsidian retails for $275, the same price as last year’s special edition Bourbon Bladed Bach 005 40th Anniversary Tool. That’s $45 more than the standard stainless/black DLC Arc, which still sells for $229.95. Manufactured in Portland, Oregon and backed by a 25-year warranty.
